Janice S.H. Ng

Janice S.H. Ng 伍淑嫻

Director

Ms Janice S.H. Ng is the eldest daughter of our founder.  She has been a proud early learner of marine fabric products from the age of six, and she is particularly adept at mending boat covers and stitching big tapestries. As Janice grew up, she became ‘the only female of Sing Kee’ who can provide an efficient installation and repairs on-site. Not unsurprisingly given her family background, Janice has a solid grounding in a wide range of knowledge in the outdoor custom-made upholstery industry.

With her individual charisma, Janice took a big step in 1985 in her career. She left her accounting job to join the family business full-time and assisted our founder Mr Ng to establish the Sing Kee Sail & Flag Company Limited. Janice remembers many people in the industry made her life “riotously exciting” and recalls them saying, with a traditional Chinese mindset: “Janice, you shouldn’t work on boats”. At the beginning of her marine upholstery career, she needed to argue frequently that she worked harder and more seriously than other men. After many years, Janice brought about an “attitude revolution that changed much more than the marine upholstery”.

Janice’s dynamic approach to design, manufacture, and extensive customer services has helped keep her team of workers to be motivated and busy since the 1980s. She continues to expand Sing Kee’s work in manufacturing boat covers and outdoor upholsteries. With recent investments on upgraded facilities in our factories, which are located in Chai Wan, and together with a new management team, she also takes flag-making and promotional products forward in this fast-paced and competitive world. Sing Kee now supplies the widest choice of marine fabrics products, boat covers, applique flags, home and office accessories as well as souvenirs for corporate events and displays.

Janice is best known for being a powerful motivator and inspirational leader for her working team in the factory as well as the mobile installation team for site works. She has strong self-confidence to get through some of the biggest obstacles in her career. Few incidents in particular marked her extraordinary talents and how she built a commercial empire during her thirty-one years in the industry.

Prince Charles’s tour to Hong Kong

Prince Charles was expected at the opening of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre featuring a dazzling line-up of top international artists. The ceremonial curtains for the opening ceremony which was shipped from United Kingdom required urgent alterations on the day before the grand opening. Janice successfully mended the huge curtains within a few hours although this kind of job normally takes several weeks to finish. Soon after, Janice became a well-known curtain specialist.

Singing Concert 1990s

She once again modified the stage curtains for famous concerts in an incredibly short time. Our customer was delighted with the quality and the expertise of Janice to modify the curtains so quickly and to their requirements. Janice showed her ability in keeping production running smoothly in a short lead time in a manufacturing environment. She led her team to become the very best theatre and stage curtains manufacturer.

Three-dimensional fabric props 2009

Janice was asked to make some three-dimensional fabric props for four promotion vans. She was able to do all measurements relying on her own naked eyes.  She created her own designs for the props and triumphantly decorated four vans with custom-built fabric props, creating possibly the world’s biggest sports shoes, hamburger, pineapple fried rice, hotdog and ham and cheese spaghetti for a popular city event.

Janice is strong when facing challenges, she is a risk-taker, an innovator, a visionary, and a leader. She is someone who can show hard-work and with the desire and passion to translate customers’ dreams into reality. She declared her success with a view that: “it is important to have good communication skills and show customers you understand what they actually need… being a good listener to the customer and try to understand what they mean, as well as maintaining a good relationship, are vital.” Janice also said, “in the coming five years we will look for fresh, innovative ways to train a production team with skilful frontline manufacturing workers. She envisions a culture of responsibility and integrity—encouraging Sing Kee’s employees to work with dedication—and with the understanding that if something is best for our business, it is good for the industry.

Ms Janice Ng is a true fighter for the marine upholstery industry – just like our founder who was filled with industriousness and perseverance.
